What is the Immune System?

Your immune system is an incredible advanced structure made up of multiple cells, tissues, chemicals and organs acting in unison. Its primary role is to protect your body from infection. It recognises abnormal cells, like viruses and bacteria, and instantly acts to recognise the infection, produce antibodies, trigger other immune responses and even learns how to deal with those same or similar infections for the future.

Naturally, having a weak immune system or Immunodeficiency suppresses your body’s ability to fight abnormal and foreign cells, allowing them to wreak havoc on your body. 

On the other hand, an overactive immune system like in the case of autoimmune disease can be equally as bad, since the body’s incredible ability to fight off infection is instead focused on trying to attack normal components of the body.

That’s why it’s important to maintain a healthy immune system as best as we can. Luckily, your body is pretty good at doing this itself, we just need to make sure our nutrition and lifestyle supports immune function, rather than sabotaging it.

Unfortunately, there is no special secret, food or supplement that can supercharge your immune system. Unfortunately, if you’re getting sick all the time or believe your immune system is weak, it’s usually because you aren’t giving your body what it needs to function at 100%. Here’s our immune system checklist to make sure your body is ready for any occasion. 

One: Vitamins and Minerals

It’s no secret that vitamins and minerals are essential for your immune system to function properly, but which ones exactly? At the current time, we have a sizeable body of evidence showing that Vitamins A, C, D and E are crucial for immune function, and there’s some evidence that Vitamin B6, B12, Zinc and K have benefits as well. How do you get all those? Simple, eat your fruits and vegetables daily. It also doesn’t hurt to have a multivitamin daily as insurance!

Two: Exercise

Exercise increases cellular immunity and increases production of immune cells like cytokines, leukocytes and Natural Killer cells. Not only does it help your immune system function properly, but it also increases the immune response to any current illness or infection that your body is fighting. Keep in mind that overly strenuous exercise can sometimes have a net negative effect, so if you are sick, stick to moderate intensity exercise.  

Three: Sleep

Sleep and the circadian rhythm is intertwined with every function of the body, including the immune system. Proper sleep is essential for both the production of immune cells, initiation of the immune system, and proper immune function. Aim for a minimum of 8 hours every night, and if you can manage more sleep, then do it! 

Four: Avoid Alcohol 

This should come at a no brainer, excessive drinking has immune suppressant effects. While having one or two drinks isn’t going to hurt, it’s important to enjoy alcohol in moderation and not too often. 

That ‘special’ immune system boosting nutrition plan, is probably just the food you should have been having in the first place. If you eat 80% whole foods and vegetables and exercise regularly, rest assured you are doing pretty much everything you can to have a strong immune system.
